Blueboys Rally for MWC Victory

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Illinois College baseball team erased a three-run deficit and recorded a 5-4, 10-inning victory over Ripon in the first game of a Midwest Conference weekend series on Friday at the Future Champs Complex.

The game was moved to Jacksonville due to inclement weather in Ripon, Wis. With the victory, IC moved to 15-8 and 2-5 in MWC play while the Red Hawks fell to 4-10 and 1-3.

After Ripon opened the game with three runs in the bottom of the first, the Blueboys began to chip away. IC scored two in the fourth when Logan Schweigert doubled home Jon Tate and Connor Hennemann.

The Red Hawks added another run in their half of the fifth to make it 4-2 before the Blueboys answered in the sixth a Sam Hulvey single that plated Schweigert. IC tied the contest an inning later when Nolan Decker's sacrifice fly scored Ryne Mapes.

Despite both teams having multiple opportunities, the contest remained scoreless throughout regulation. The Blueboys opened the 10th inning with a Decker double. Brandon Smith pinch ran for Decker and Hannemann moved him to third with a flyout to right field before Tyler Barker doubled him home to give IC its first lead of the night.

That was all Anthony Buonaura needed. The lefty shut down Ripon to close out the victory and move his record to 2-0 on the season. Buonaura tossed four inning of relief, scattering two hits with four strikeouts. Jack McGuire started for IC and pitched six innings, allowing four hits, four runs (two earned) with eight strikeouts.

Schweigert paced the offense with two hits and a pair of RBI while Weaver added three hits.  Mapes also collected a pair of hits.

IC and Ripon will close out the series tomorrow with a doubleheader at Joe Brooks Field. First pitch is slated for Noon.
