IC Esports Earns Third Place At Midwest Esports Conference
DEERFIELD, Ill. - The Illinois College Esports teams concluded action at the two-day 2024 Midwest Esports Conference with a third place finish out of nine teams in Rocket League. The trio of Glenn Conway, Dwight Duijneveld, and Josh Hallanger faced off against Cornell College in a thrilling five-game series that ended in dramatic fashion.
Game 1: Illinois College 1, Cornell College 0
IC entered this five-game series with a game plan of playing slow and methodical knowing our defense would be hard to penetrate. IC earned a 1-0 victory in a defensive battle.
Game 2: Illinois College 2, Cornell College 1
IC came out with a different game plan in game two as the team tried to play loose and fast. That plan did not work out but IC got extremely lucky as Cornell gave up two own goals as IC was able to take that game 2-1.
Game 3: Illinois College 0, Cornell College 3
IC continued to play the loose and fast and it backfired extremely harshly. Cornell was able to this game as Flux from Cornell scored three goals.
Game 4: Illinois College 0, Cornell College 2
The team reverted back to playing a slow and methodical game but with IC's tempo increase in games 2 and 3, it gave Flux of Cornell a lot of confidence. Flux forced a game five as he scored two goals.
Game 5: Illinois College 3, Cornell College 2
The winner-take-all-game was another tense battle where Cornell out shot IC in the early going. IC responded with three goals as Conway, Duijneveld, and Hallanger each netted a solo goal for the 3-1 lead with 10 second remaining. Cornell scored a goal with five seconds left as their only hope for victory was to be on a kickoff goal. IC mess hit the kickoff and gave Cornell an opportunity. The game-tying shot attempt from Cornell went off the crossbar to the ground which ended the game as IC took the series victory.
