IC Overpowers Monmouth in MWC Sweep

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Illinois College softball team used a big offensive day to post a 6-2, 15-7 sweep of Monmouth in a Midwest Conference doubleheader Wednesday at Jessica Kamp Field.

IC improved to 13-18 overall and 8-2 in league play while the Fighting Scots dropped to 5-24, 3-2.

Game 1 (IC 6 Monmouth 2)
Julia Drake had 11 strikeouts and Jaycie Edwards drove in four runs as IC cruised to the victory.

After Monmouth got on the board in the top of the first inning, IC came right back with a pair in their half of the first when Edwards rapped a two-run single. The Lady Blues plated three more in the third inning as Edwards roped a two-run double and then later scored on a Fighting Scot error. IC closed out the scoring in the fourth when Kayla Serpa grounded out to score Claudia Adam

Monmouth tallied a solo run in the seventh before Drake closed out the contest. Drake allowed five hits and two runs (one earned) to go with her 11 strikeouts as she improved to 7-8 on the season.

Edwards and Calynn Gicante each had a pair of hits to pace the offense.

Game 2 (IC 15 Monmouth 7)
IC used a balanced offense to erase a 5-1 deficit and cruise to victory, outscoring Monmouth 14-2 over the last four innings.

The Fighting Scots had taken a 5-1 lead after their half of the third when the Lady Blues' bats got going. 

IC scored twice in the third on RBI by Cheyenne Anderson and Edwards and then took a 7-4 lead in the fourth on triples by Megan Doolittle and Gicante and singles from Allison Mortland and Edwards.

After Monmouth added a pair of runs to tie the game at seven in the top of the fifth, IC unloaded, scoring twice in the fifth on RBI singles from Serpa and Anderson. IC then finished the contest with a six spot in the bottom of the sixth. A Delaney Melton RBI double started the scoring and then Mortland singled home a run, Serpa walked with the bases loaded, Gicante singled in a run and Kendall Cole finished the scoring, and the game, with an RBI single.

Taylor Henry pitched four innings of relief to earn her second victory of the season.

Gicante was 4-for-5 to lead a balanced offensive attack. Anderson drove in three runs and five other Lady Blues had two RBI each.

IC returns to Jessica Kamp field for the final non-conference doubleheader of the season when it entertains Eureka on Sunday for Senior Day. The first game is set for 1:00 p.m. and Senior Day ceremonies will be held prior to the start of the first game.
