Lady Blues Soccer Shutout Rams In Home Finale

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - The Illinois College women's soccer team hosted Cornell College for a Midwest Conference match Tuesday night. The Lady Blues defeated the Rams by the final score of 2-0 to improve to 5-4-1 at home this season.

On the starting kickoff, IC's Lauren Sinclair dribbled the ball through two Rams players that got IC into the attacking zone. After the ball was batted around, Sinclair delivered a pass to Erin O'Connell when O'Connell sent a fantastic through ball to Stephanie Flores on the right-wing. In the 16 second mark, Flores ripped a shot that found the back of the net for the early 1-0 lead.

In the 17th minute, Cornell a had a great opportunity to tie to even the match with two shots on goal. First-year goalkeeper Sophia Kriegesmann eliminated those opportunities with two spectacular saves. Each team continued to battle back-and-forth as the score remained 1-0 at the half.

IC came out in the second half and delivered four shots on goal in the first eight minutes. Shortly later, the Rams responded with an offensive drive that resulted in a shot by Kylie Hard as that shot was collected by Kriegesmann.

In the 74th minute, IC was rewarded a penalty kick when Sinclair was fouled in the box. Moments later, Haley Sommer blasted a hard shot in the back of the net for the final IC goal of the match. IC held a strong defensive stance for the remainder of the match that earned their fourth shutout victory of the season.

For the match, IC outshot the Rams 16-11 led by Sommer with seven while Abbi Renwick contributed three.

The Lady Blues will travel to Beloit College on Saturday, October 28 at 11:00 AM for their final match of the 2023 season.
