Men’s Soccer Drops Heartbreaker in Midwest Conference Tournament

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Illinois College men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 double overtime decision to Grinnell College in the semifinals of the Midwest Conference Tournament in front of a record crowd on Friday afternoon at England Stadium.

The victory moved Grinnell to Saturday's championship match where it will face Lake Forest College who posted a 2-0 win over Cornell College in Friday's first semifinal match. The winner will advance to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

The Blueboys, who won the Midwest Conference regular season title, finished the campaign with a 10-5-3 record while Grinnell moved to 9-5-5.

Friday's match was an even contest throughout regulation and the overtimes as both teams had numerous scoring opportunities but Illinois College's Owen Macias and Grinnell's Carter Benson were stellar in their respective goals. The Pioneers were finally able to break through at the 101:48 mark of the second overtime when Samuel Gojjam slipped a shot past Macias on a breakaway.

The Blueboy attack was led by Tyler Schiltz who had four shots. Jives Efemini and Tyler Lunning each recorded a pair of shots for IC.
