Kendra Bass and Ashlyn Wightman Selected To All-MWC Teams in Women’s Basketball

GRINNELL, Iowa. - The Midwest Conference has released their postseason awards from the 2023-24 women's basketball season. IC's Kendra Bass was selected to the First-Team while Ashlyn Wightman was named to the Second-Team All-MWC team. 

Kendra Bass: First-Team All-MWC
A player who elected to come back for her fifth and final collegiate season, Bass had a historic season as she etched her name into the IC women's basketball record books as the NEW All-Time single-season steals record holder and with 81 steals this season. Bass was crowned the record holder at the 3:03 mark in the third quarter against Knox College in the Midwest Conference Tournament semifinal matchup on February 23 in Ripon, Wisconsin. 

By collecting 81 steals, Bass surpassed Candy Norville's record of 78 that was set back in the 2008-09 season. With the season officially over, Bass now ranks third in the IC record books with a 3.11 steals per game average which surpassed Amy Wilson's record of 3.00 steals per game from the 1990-91 season.

The Lebanon, Illinois native led the Lady Blues in scoring with 400 points this season which averaged to 15.4 points per game that finished fifth in the MWC. In addition, Bass was named MWC Performer of the Week twice this season as both came in the month of January.
 
Ashlyn Wightman: Second-Team All-MWC
Wightman had an unbelievable senior season in a Lady Blues uniform as she broke two women's basketball records. Wightman stands alone at the top of the All-Time Career Blocks leader with 159 career blocks and the All-Time single-season record holder with 69 blocks.

Back on February 7 in the matchup against Grinnell College, Wightman broke the IC single-season block record with her 57th block of the season which broke her own record of 56 from last season. 

In the final decision against Lake Forest of the season on February 10, Wightman broke the ALL-TIME career blocks record with her 153rd block which broke Vickie Meiners record from 1989-1993 seasons.

In addition, the week of February 5-11, Wightman capped off the record-breaking performances by being named MWC Performer of the Week. For the week, Wightman contributed 26 points, 25 rebounds, and seven blocks. In the two games, Wightman averaged 13 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks per game.

This season, Wightman led the Lady Blues with nine double-doubles as she recorded her season-best points of 23 and 18 rebounds both against Knox College. In addition, Wightman finished the season ranked first in the MWC with those 69 blocks which averaged to 2.7 blocks per game. Wightman secured the second spot in the rebounding category as she secured 227 rebounds this season. Collectively, Wightman averaged 11.7 points and 8.7 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game this season. 

This is the seventh consecutive season Head Coach Jennifer McCormick has had a student-athlete(s) receive an all-conference honor excluding the 2020 Covid-19 season
