Password Requirements

Length and Complexity Requirements

In order to provide better security for your accounts, everyone must maintain a password that meets the following minimum requirements:

  • Must be a MINIMUM of 12 characters
  • At least one uppercase alphabetic character (A-Z)
  • At least one lowercase alphabetic character (a-z)
  • At least one special character (!@#$%^&*) is recommended but not required
  • At least one number

We understand that 12 characters seems like a lot to remember. However, we would like to get everyone in the habit of creating a passphrase instead of a password.

A great way to both keep track of and create strong passwords for Illinois College and all the other sites you log in to around the internet to use a password management tool such as LastPass. LastPass is free for general use. There is also a $12 / year version that allows you to do more, like access your account using an app on your phone. LastPass also allows you to configure two-factor authentication using Google Authenticator, a process all faculty and staff are likely familiar with from when we turned it on for Google.
